View from a train

This piece is one of a planned series of small oil paintings inspired by the view from a train travelling between Dundee and Edinburgh. The route takes in the Fife coastline with views toward Edinburgh. The sea is calm, reflecting light clouds and the receding tide has exposed the sand flats Seals can often be seen basking on the rocks along the coastline but none visible today. I initially worked from an oil pastel drawing taken from the original photograph but found it difficult to capture the sand flats from the sketch. It is now starting to take shape though.
