January Day, Gadden Loch

January Day, Gadden Loch

Gadden Loch is one of two man-made lochs near Collessie in Fife. Excavated during the 1980s and 1990s as sand and gravel quarries, the area has been transformed into a wildlife and nature reserve which is now home to a wide variety of bird and plant species as well as other creatures such as red squirrels, otters and bats. Beavers have also been seen. There are two lochs on the reserve which are connected by pathways and the site also has a bird hide.

This painting was developed from a photograph taken on a cold but bright January day. The colours are soft and gentle, the trees and reeds on the far shore are reflected in the still waters of the loch. It has been executed in oils on board. It sits in a floating frame which harmonizes with the colours of the painting.
