Oil on canvas version of a previous study of the same view. This works better for this image I think. In the previous piece, I used acrylic on paper coated with an acrylic medium. This resulted in a very textured piece which was not the ‘feel’ I was looking to create.

I was trying to capture the contrast between the brightly lit hill in the background and the valley which is still in the shade. The detail of the trees and undergrowth on the railway embankment has been softened in the oil painting using muted grays, ochres and browns on a coating of grey gesso. This provides a smoother base to work on and the slow drying characteristics of the oils allow for a subtler blending of colours. The overall effect is softer and a better representation of the scene.
