First of ‘23

Winter sun

I started this oil painting at the end of 2022 but have only just managed to finish it. The third in a trilogy of sunset scenes along the River Eden, this piece measures 60 cm x 60 cm so is considerably larger than my usual output. The sun is just vanishing behind the distant hills, creating the illusion of light, spilling over the edge of th horizon. The riverside is dark and rendered in browns, reds and ochres. The leafless trees are silhouetted against the low lying mist which is tinged with orange.
