Winter sunset

This large (60cm x 60cm) oil on canvas, depicts a section of the River Eden as the sun starts to go down. The river valley is often shrouded in a low lying mist during the autumn and winter months, a phenomenon that has featured in a number of my recent paintings and sketches.
The palette for this piece is restricted to ultramarine, Payne’s grey, raw umber and Titanium white with touches of Indian yellow and Windsor violet. This has created a subdued atmosphere and a sense of the approaching evening.

This contrasts with my last painting, ‘Wintry evening, River Eden’ which also shows the river valley at sunset and also swathed in mist. The sun here is low in the sky, just skimming the horizon and casting an orange glow across the landscape.
Both of these paintings will be available for sale early next year and can be seen on my gallery page.
