Wintry afternoon, River Eden

This oil on canvas, was the subject of my recent “Work in Progress” post. My aim was to capture the atmosphere created by the setting sun and the low-lying mist on the common. This is a much larger canvas than I would normally use and I very much enjoyed the sense of freedom this gave me. I worked largely from a sketch which was quite loose and abstract. I referred to the original photograph toward the end of the process to help me capture the sense of approaching darkness. This led me to darken the sky and desaturate the colour of the fields helping to create a greater contrast with the setting sun and places where the suns rays hits the vegetation.
This painting will be available for sale in a few weeks, in the meantime you can take a closer look in the gallery page.
