Sunset on the Eden

I was walking home from town one evening last winter: it was very cold with a touch of frost on the grass. My route takes me along the banks of the river Eden, heading west. The sun was low on the horizon, just setting and giving the impression that it was melting into the landscape. There was a low mist in the valley, lying over the common. The Lomond Hills, normally visible from this vantage point, were also obscured by a thin layer of cloud.

For this piece I am working on a much larger canvas than normal and working from a watercolour pencil sketch, rather than referring to a photograph. I have deliberately kept detail to a minimum, trying to capture the overall atmosphere of the scene using shape, texture and a relatively limited colour palette.
