View from the Corran Ferry

This is the view from the small ferry that makes the short crossing from Corran to Ardgour. This photo was taken on a day of mixed weather when it was more inclined to rain than not. It was a pleasant crossing non-the-less with some splendid views of the mountains, shrouded in mist.
I want to capture the softness of the mountains silhouetted against the sky. The middle ground is mostly in shadow, masking the detail of the trees and the shoreline.

Working with a limited palette of Payne’s Gray, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Cobalt Blue and Titanium White, I’ve started to map out the different areas of this painting. The lightest areas are the sea and sky with the mountains and sky, which make up around two-thirds of the area of the canvas. I haven’t quite got the balance right yet as the outline of the mountains are too stark against the sky: something to work on over the next few days.
