These three paintings have been created in the last few weeks and have just been added to the Gallery page.

Roses By My Door

I recently acquired a very large, mature garden and one of the standout features is a beautiful climbing rose that covers the wall just outside the back door. We were fortunate to have a proper summer this year which, for Scotland, means more than two consecutive days of sunshine over the course of a week. It is difficult to describe the colour of this rose and even harder to do it justice in pigment but I’m glad I made the attempt as it had to be pruned hard back to allow some work to be done to the stonework. It remains to be seen whether it will recover from this assault. I used a limited palette for this piece: cadmium red, cadmium yellow, payne’s gray and titanium white, applying the paint fairly thickly to provide texture.

White rose

Another of the beautiful roses in the garden, this one a delicate white with hints of pink. I am pleased with how this one has turned out: I think I have managed to create the illusion of a delicate flower bathed in sunlight. This is one of many rose bushes in this incredible garden and I’m sure I’ll return to this theme as time goes on.

Summer Barley

The final painting for now is a rural landscape, showing one of the barley fields a short distance from my house. There is something hypnotic in the grain swaying and rippling in the gentle summer breeze. As with the other pieces on this page I used a limited palette of cobalt blue, cadmium yellow, white, payne’s gray and a touch of cadmium red.
