Candlemaker Row

This is an oil painting that I did in 2004 and was an early attempt at using oils. It is still a favourite of mine: it shows Candlemaker Row in the old town of Edinburgh, viewed from the top of the hill leading down to the Grassmarket. The tenements and shops to the left are in deep shade contrasting with the bright sunshine on the opposite side of the street. The road is quiet with only one or two people out and about, recalling a time when there were fewer tourists visiting Edinburgh.
