Edinburgh Sunset

The short winter days and clear sky’s have resulted in some beautiful sunsets of late and we have been enjoying some afternoon walks in the Royal Botanic Gardens. I love to see the skeletal forms of the trees in winter and the intricate patterns of the branches against the winter sky. These two watercolour sketches were created from photographs taken at the time. It is difficult to capture the drama of the sunset and I am discovering just how dark the foreground has to be to get a true contrast. I like these in their own right but will probably try an oil of at least one of them.
