Portencross Castle

Portencross Castle

This piece is for a commission and should portray the castle, with the Isle of Arran visible in the background and featuring a boat. It isn’t a part of the world I am familiar with so I am working from a series of photographs. Each of the photos was shot from a different angle and in different lights, some featured boats and some didn’t so the final sketch is a composite of different elements from the photographs, to meet the requirements of the brief.

For my last two paintings I have applied the pigment by brush rather than palette knife but for this piece I have reverted to a more textured style.

I’m fairly happy with this so far but still have a way to go before it’s finished. I’ll be posting more on progress with this work in the days to come so watch this space!
