Langdale from Loughrigg

The first completed work of 2021 which takes me back to last summer, and a taste of freedom in the Lake District. This image captures the view from Loughrigg Fell, looking toward Langdale. For once the weather was kind which allowed me to complete a preliminary sketch. I was hoping to capture a dramatic vista, made more so by the shade cast by the summer sun in the valley.
I started the painting from a ground of red ochre and had thought initially to retain quite a lot of the base colour to emphasise the dramatic nature of the piece. As I worked through it, I gradually lost most of the ochre colour though hints remain on the hillisde where the pigment is thinnest. Overall I am pleased with the result and will return to Cumbria (perhaps not literally as things stand, but certainly figuratively speaking), in the months to come.
From start to finish. This piece will be available for sale in due course. Keep an eye on this site for details.
