Helen Smart lived in Edinburgh from 1972 where she studied textile design at Edinburgh College of Art. She returned to painting in 1998, working in watercolour, acrylic and oils. She ran the Grove Gallery from 2007-2010 in the Fountainbridge district of Edinburgh, where she displayed her own work and that of local artists. She staged exhibitions there, such as ‘Urban Landscapes’ and ‘New Horizons’. Her artistic practice focuses on three forms: land, sea and city. Her paintings and drawings draw inspiration from the Impressionists and the Scottish Colourists, including their interpretation of colour and form. The work presented here reflects her interaction with the natural and built environment. She now lives and works in Fife, Scotland.
